Nice one, AOL! A great look back at one of the most extraordinary human achievements ever.

Somehow it seems that nowadays the only space stories that make the news are accidents, or little jokey stories…. Isn’t it time to get that excitement back into contemporary space exploration? Isn’t it time we remembered that humans can, if they wish, do incredible, wonderful things. Isn’t it time to get back in that rocket, and head once more to the moon?

At 3:25 on June 11 2009, Kaguya safely (!) impacted with the Moon’s surface.

I watched that day, on Tanegashima Island, as the rocket burst into the sky and powered towards the distant moon, carrying it’s satellite cargo. And now that same satellite’s long, long journey
has come to an end. It’s a strange and sad feeling to think of it crashing into the surface of the moon, up there, all those miles away.

Details of the time and location of the impact of the lunar orbital satellite, Kaguya:

Impact date: 18:25, June 10, 2009 (GMT) Near side, night time area
Impact location: E80.4, S65.5
Lunar phase & age on impact date: 17.3 (London)

The day after the impact, I flicked on the TV to hear someone from the National Observatory speaking right before the impact, on a rainy Tokyo day: “We’re all so sad, it’s as though it’s our tears that are making the sky cry.”

What a romantic comment! And it so beautifully sums up the spirit of the folk at the National Observatory…
