Airport Fashion Guide Part I: Summer Style

Updated: Aug 15, 2019

Walking through the arrival gates has in recent years become one of the more renowned catwalks. Some of the most memorable and loved looks have been those seen on idols' during their tour travels.

As much as it is nice to look your best when travelling, a lot of the time it is not that practical. Sitting on a plane for 11 or 12 hours is tiring and often uncomfortable. Taking inspiration from my favourite looks and recent airport fashion trends, I will be showcasing five different looks whilst making them not only more practical but also more 'summer-friendly'.

1. Wide Leg Jeans/Trousers

The wide leg jean and trouser trend is one which I have fallen deep in love with and Blackpink's Jennie knows how to style this item perfectly. I LOVE everything this girl wears, so I decided to revamp these two looks of hers; both super chic but super casual too.

Nasty Gal. CHECK BARDOT BALLOON SLEEVE BLOUSE. £8.00.

Although Jennie's checkered cropped cardigan is the stuff of dreams, for me it is not that practical. It often gets chilly sitting in a plane and I don't know about you but I am often prone to bloating on long haul flights so it would be my worst nightmare to wear something cropped. This blouse from Nasty Gal is a great alternative. It still gives off the cool, chic vibes that Jennie's cardigan does but its looser fit accompanied by its long sleeves provides ultimate comfort. The neutral colours are also super useful as they can match with a lot of other colours so its a great basic to have and style.

Urban Outfitters. BDG LUCA LIGHT WASH DENIM JOGGER JEANS. £55.00.

Wearing tight denim jeans on a long flight is not the one. Although you may look super cute strutting around departures, jeans are not the comfiest thing to be sitting around in for hours. To recreate Jennie's first look, I really wanted to try and find a pair of wide leg denim joggers but could not find any anywhere so instead I opted for these denim joggers jeans from Urban Outfitters. Besides from the fact the elasticated waistband means your stomach won't feel as restricted and tight, these jean joggers are just a great thing to throw on on days you do not know what to wear. These matched with the blouse help to create a more functional version of Jennie's iconic airport fit.

Missguided. GREY LONG SLEEVE MAXI DUSTER JACKET. £30.40.

In terms of Jennie's second look, I decided to keep the items of clothing the same but just change the colour palette to one slightly more summery. This Grey duster is a great option as it has a similar shilouette to that of Jennie's coat but is much more suitable for the warmer weather. What is more, this duster is pretty lightweight given its thin material and its structured shape helps to make it look a lot more expensive than it is.

ASOS. ASOS DESIGN CHECK JACQUARD WIDE LEG TROUSER WITH DEEP WAISTBAND. £30.00.

Lilac is this year's colour. Everywhere you look, lilac is the colour of choice. These check trousers from ASOS almost look like pyjama bottoms but I think that's what makes them the perfect choice for travelling. Furthermore, the fact they are high waisted also means they are super comfy.

ASOS. ASOS DESIGN OVERSIZED LONG WOVEN SCARF IN STRIPE. £15.00.

Although scarves aren't really the top choice summer accessory, they are certainly useful for a plane ride. I felt this oversized striped scarf also from ASOS helped to bring more colour and 'summery vibes' to the overall outfit but in a subtle and simple way. Additionally, I thought that by having this type of scarf on board with you, you could use it as an extra blanket if need be.

Zara. BUCKET BAG. £19.99.

Sadly, unlike Jennie Kim we cannot not all be CHANEL ambassadors (although we really wish we could). The girls of BLACKPINK are always seem carrying a CHANEL bag during their travels, not surprising given they are super dreamy and super gorgeous. A small backpack like Jennie's is sometimes all you need for your hand on luggage. This bucket bag from Zara is a similar shape to Jennie's CHANEL one and is a convenient size as well. Its simple detailing means that it can go with any type of look, making it another really good basic to have.

Olivia Burton. ROSE GOLD TONE BEE PIN. £12.00.

Sometimes adding a pin makes a basic coat look a little more exciting. Although this Bee pin from Olivia Burton isn't like the classic CHANEL pin, it is a fraction of the price. This little pin comes in gold, rose gold and silver, however, I felt the Rose Gold best matched the colours of the other items.

2. The Oversized Jumper

The oversized jumper look is something which I always go for when flying long haul. It is not only super cute but so easy to recreate. Paired with some statement shoes and accessories, a plain jumper is transformed into something much more stylish and on top of this, it looks truly effortless. Red Velvet's Yeri has made her mark by pulling off the oversized jumper look not only once, but twice.

Pretty Little Thing. RED KNITTED JUMPER DRESS. £15.00.

It is truly easy to recreate her first look. This red jumper dress from Pretty Little Thing is a staple piece, providing you great comfort. I love the high neck, which is really in right now and the bright red colour is a statement in itself. This is a really simple way of looking really 'stand out' on the cheap.

Skinnydip. LEOPARD LUNA HAT. £4.20.

This beret from Skinnydip looks really similar to that of Yeri's and is currently on sale. Animal print has really come to play in the last couple of years and it is a trend which I think is here for good now.

I Saw It First. BLACK DETROIT DISTRESSED HEM SWEATER DRESS. £10.00.

In Yeri's second outfit, the slogan jumper is the main player. This DETROIT jumper dress is similar in style and in look to Yeri's. The distressed hem also adds something to this simple dress. For a steal of £10.00, you really cannot go wrong.

House of Fraser. ELLA DRAPE DUSTER COAT. £24.00.

For the summertime, you do not want to be lugging around a thick coat like that of Yeri's khaki one. This is a great alternative. This one from House of Fraser which has gone down dramatically in price has such a gorgeous and unique shape to it. What stood out most for me is the way it flows and like the Missguided duster coat from earlier, its lightweight material makes it suitable for travelling as it is easy to pack.

ASOS. ASOS DESIGN FELT BUCKET HAT. £18.00.

This felt bucket hat is the closest thing I could find that looked similar to that of Yeri's. Bucket hats are so in right now and it is another trend which I have fallen in love with. The felt material used helps to achieve a more 'sophisticated' and 'classy' look.

Black knee high boots are the choice of shoe for Yeri in both her iconic fits. These boots originally from Public Desire are the best option given the flat heel they have. Trust me, although heels look super chic you do not want to be walking around in them after your long journey, I have done it before and it was not the one. Knee highs are great to bring with you as they can be used for both more formal and casual holiday looks.

ASOS. PUBLIC DESIRE ELLE BLACK FLAT OVER THE KNEE BOOT. £39.99.

3. The Long Skirt

Midi skirts are so in this year. From high street to online, this type of skirt can be found in an abundance of patterns and colours. Both of these outfits are A-List. Doyeon gives more of a 'girl crush' vibe with her use of layering and asymmetry whilst Sowon provides a total girlfriend look with a splash of life with her colourful skirt and simple graphic t-shirt.

UNIQLO. WOMEN RISE AGAIN BY VERDY UT HALF SLEEVED GRAPHIC TSHIRT. £12.90.

If you are looking for your perfect graphic t-shirt, look no further. UNIQLO is the master of all things collaboration and the graphic t-shirt. Scrolling through the website, I came across this 'Break the Mold' tee which comes both in red and white. This top caught my attention not only because of the beautiful and standout font used but also because of the high neckline which is becoming ever more popular. What makes this tee special though is the fact that it is part of a campaign with Urban Japanese Artist Verdy. According to UNIQLO the 'positive messages' are suppose to inspire and impact women and children across the world and that is a message which I think is important to spread.

Zara. CHECKED SKIRT. £9.99.

Lowkey giving me 'country-girl' vibes is this midi-skirt from ZARA. The blue, grey and white tones in this skirt compliment the bright red nicely. Once again, this skirt is super practical as it is not only comfy but is airy.

Achieve a look more like Doyeon's by adding an oversized blazer. Although not pinstriped like hers, this one from Missy Empire is the perfect size and comes in an array of colours. If you want to spruce up this jacket a little bit, you could always add your own pin badges like Doyeon does on hers.

Missy Empire. MAE BLACK OVERSIZED BLAZER. £32.20.

4. Layering the Casual Dress

A simple black dress is sometimes all you need. Having a basic ribbed tee and a simple dress are essential items to bring given they can be matched with a whole range of things.

ASOS. ASOS DESIGN SOFT DENIM MIDI SLIP DRESS IN WASHED BLACK. £30.00.

If you want to venture out a bit more, this midi slip dress is a great choice. Although still simple, the denim material and washed colour helps to make it slightly more unique and interesting. This dress is also backless meaning that it is perfect for hot summer vacations.

Boohoo. JUMBO RIB LONG SLEEVE CREW NECK TOP. £4.00.

Ribbed tees are super useful. You can find them in a range of colours in most high street brands. This one from Boohoo is only £4.00 and looks really similar in colour and style to that wore by Red Velvet's Joy in the first photo.

Nasty Gal. WANT AND DON'T BUCKET UP SHOULDER BAG. £10.00.

Joy's bucket bag is super cute as well. This one from Nasty Gal is only £10.00 and the crocodile skin texture and gold chain help to make it look super cool and super chic. Perfect for storing small essentials such as your passport and phone. If you want to travel light, this may be a good choice.

5. The 'Summer' Knit

Momo's look on the left is drop dead gorgeous, however, in the summer seasons you will want something with a slightly less thick material.

Topshop. SLEEVELESS RIBBED FUNNEL NECK TANK TOP & SPLIT FRONT MIDI SKIRT. Top £15, Skirt £10

To achieve the 'summer knit' why not opt for this ribbed co-ord set from Topshop. Although is it not really a knit as it is not made from wool, it has a similar silhouette to that of Momo's outfit. The perfect outfit for flying given it is comfy and if you get too cold during the flight you can just throw on an oversized cardigan to complete the look.

ASOS. MANGO CABLE OVERSIZED JUMPER IN ORANGE. £49.99.

For Lia's outfit, I decided to change her blue cable knit to this orange one originally from Mango. For me, the colour orange screams summer and lowkey also fits in with the neon trend which is super hot at the moment. This jumper is almost exactly the same to that wore by Lia, but I can guarantee, it is a lot more affordable. Although you probably won't want to be wearing a knitted jumper on a beach holiday, on more sightseeing-orientated travels a jumper is always a useful item to have.

Brandy Melville. GRIFFIN SHORTS. £12.00.

If you are feeling adventurous, grab a baker boy style hat like this one which is now only £4 from Topshop. Hats are a great accessory to bring with you on holiday and can instantly bring a look together.

Topshop. BAKER BOY HAT. £4.00.

Finish off the look with a big tote bag. Like Lia's, this gorgeous number from Zara is decorated with studs but in a simple and minimalistic way. Having a bag like this is also very useful for hand luggage; keeping all your travel documents and other essentials in one place.

Zara. STUDDED TOTE BAG. £39.99.
